After gaining my BA in psychology from the University of Alberta in Canada, I decided to move back to Glasgow, and study hypnotherapy through the University of West London. This is the only University accredited hypnotherapy course in the UK and included a Certificate in Personal and Professional Development, and a Post Graduate certificate in Hypnotherapy. I have always been interested in alternative therapies, particularly using non pharmaceutical interventions to help with psychological issues. I think the most important lesson in hypnotherapy is: Your Mind is More Powerful Than You Know Although we are aware that we make decisions based on a gut feeling, or recognise disordered thinking or behaviour patterns, we often don't know how to target those underlying beliefs to make the desired changes in our lives. Hypnosis harnesses the power of your mind in order to change the underlying disordered thoughts and beliefs that have led you to have problems in the past. Once these underlying thoughts and beliefs are changed, so your behaviour begins to change. You easily stop overeating, you easily stop biting your nails, you easily stop allowing anxiety to dominate your life, you easily change your life for the better. Hypnosis acts on the unconscious mind, the part of our mind that deals with emotions and emotional learning. We can see our unconscious mind at work when we 'have a good feeling about this', there are clearly underlying processes at work, but our conscious mind is often only aware of the finished result. While under hypnosis, I work as your guide, helping you to address your unconscious mind and the unconscious processes that lead to the negative conscious thoughts and behaviours. Although this can be a lot of work, it is also a pleasant and relaxing state, and one that anyone can attain.
